Even if you are hiring low wage, hourly employees, an executive coaching consultancy with a good employee assessment program can save you big money. Studies have shown that the cost of hiring hourly employees (earning within about a dollar of minimum wage) is, on average, about half of the individual’s annual wages.
That’s an absurd amount of money to be wasting. How many of those employees do you think stick around for more than a year? Probably not very many, which means you are paying that same amount again, each time someone has to be replaced. So how can you avoid high turnover rates?
An employee assessment can be included in the hiring process. It’s not uncommon for HR to have some standardized assessments that are given to upper level hires at some point in the hiring process, but people applying for lower wage positions are usually not evaluated beyond reading the content of their resumes. That can be an expensive mistake.
Salespeople are a whole other breed, and an employee assessment is also available that is specially designed to evaluate fitness for a Sales position. Not only is the candidate assessed for sales knowledge, but questions are designed to determine whether this person has the right personality to be a sales rep and to find out what their motivation is, which can tell management whether the person is right for the job, but also how to set up reward programs that will be meaningful and truly increase the person’s motivation.
There are a lot of people who will tell you right off that they can’t do sales. Why not? Some are too shy. Some have too much conditioning from childhood not to ask for things, especially from strangers, so that they just can’t bring themselves to ask a customer to buy. In this economy, the theme of the day is getting to be “beggars can’t be choosers,” and an awfully large number of competent people are in the role of beggar.
Those who would never consider a sales position three years ago are now willing to do anything. Job hunters often are willing to say whatever it is that they think will get them the job, especially on a resume. You need to protect your business by getting the real truth. Being willing to do a job is a far cry from being the best person for the position! An employee assessment can get the right person in the position in the first place and save money up front and in the long run.
